Fort Stevens State Park Guide

Fort Stevens State Park: History, Nature, and Coastal Wonders Await! Guide

Fort Stevens State Park is a sprawling coastal paradise where history buffs, nature lovers, and beachcombers alike can find something to captivate them. Located at the mouth of the Columbia River, this park offers a unique blend of historical significance, stunning natural beauty, and recreational opportunities. Prepare to explore a fascinating past, wander through lush forests, and breathe in the fresh ocean air. The park's historical significance stems from its role in coastal defense. Originally built during the Civil War, Fort Stevens served as a vital part of the "Triangle of Fire," protecting the entrance to the Columbia River. It remained active through World War II, and was the only mainland U.S. military installation to be fired upon by an enemy during that war (a Japanese submarine shelled the fort in 1942). Today, you can explore the well-preserved gun batteries, wander through the underground tunnels, and learn about the fort's strategic importance through informative exhibits. Beyond its historical attractions, Fort Stevens offers a wealth of outdoor activities. Hike or bike along miles of trails that wind through forests, wetlands, and along the beach. Explore the Peter Iredale shipwreck, a haunting reminder of the power of the sea, partially buried in the sand. Go camping in one of the park's many campgrounds, or simply relax on the beach and watch the waves crash against the shore. For the culinary inclined, consider a picnic with locally sourced seafood from nearby Astoria.
